create assembly from sketch

create assembly from sketch

create assembly from sketch

(OP)
Our old workstation died and has been replaced. Our it guy has installed sw 2008 onto the new workstation.
When i create blocks in a sketch and then select the sketch and try to either right click or go to menu file, there is no longer an option to create an asembly from a sketch.
Is this a faulty installation issue or does sw 2008 need a copy of ms excel for create assembly from sketch as well as for old bom use.
Any help would be much appreciated.

RE: create assembly from sketch

I'm not sure what image you were trying to show, but the link shows an Eng-Tips page.

Have you used SW2008 before? The UI has undergone some substantial changes. Check the Help files for Layout.

You will need Excel for old style BOM and DT use, but not for any sketch to solid or assy function.

With a new install, some menu selections are not shown by default. To change that, RMB on a toolbar area and select Customize > Options and select both Show All buttons.

cheers

Thanks for the fast response.
Not sure why it shows an eng tips page as i thought i left the attachment box blank.
I am fairly new to solidworks.
I have been using 2007 for the last few months but have been given a new workstation wiith 2008 installed.
I have gone to file customize menu, i have options to make drawing from part and make assembly from part but no make assembly from sketch.
I have also rmb the toolbar and selected customize.
I have the same two options as above on the menus tab.
I have looked at the other tabs and there doesn`t seem to be an option for make assembly from sketch.
Am i missing something obvious or has the way this command works changed in sw 2008.

RE: create assembly from sketch

Please explain what you mean by "create assembly from sketch".

How did you do it in SW07?

cheers

RE: create assembly from sketch

Create new part.
Sketch some outlines and make each outline into a block.
Close the sketch and select it in the feature manager.
I could then rmb and select Create Assembly from Layout Sketch.
I would then get a dialogue box asking me for the source and the target components and their paths.
An assembly would open with the parts and layout sketch in place.

RE: create assembly from sketch

I don't remember ever seeing that in SW07.

I'm guessing it has been replaced with the Layout function in an assembly. The main difference being that you start with an assy rather than a part. Which, if you intend to create an assy, makes sense.

cheers
