Tank orifice sizes.

Tank orifice sizes.

Tank orifice sizes.

(OP)
Hi,
We have a project where we are using a storage tank sized at 1.3m H x 2m L x 3m W.
We are discharging 47.7 l/s into this tank over a 2 minute period ie 47.7 l/s x 120 seconds = 5724 l/s.
What we're trying to work out is the required size of a hole in the bottom of the tank to discharge only 10 l/s max at watever water depth was in the tank
Looking at it, if the tank is nearly full and the head is 1.3m then wont the discharge rate be faster to if the tank only had 0.5m water head? Then 0.1m head How would we work the difference?
Any pointers would be welcome.
Thanks
Lee

RE: Tank orifice sizes.

Ida..

This sounds like a bizarre homework problem...

There are some fundamental problems in understanding fluid flow here...

Why are you trying to "size of a hole in the bottom of a tank" ???

The way that most of the world controls flow rates is with a flow control valve or a VFD controlled pump. The variation in upstream pressure is controled by a pump.

Is this the first time that you have done something like this ?

Anybody else..???

RE: Tank orifice sizes.

I agree with MJCronin. You cannot make a hole in a tank do the work of a flow controller.
