Hello everybody:

We have the following situation operating with waste heat boilers.

Boiler "A" (water tube):

Exhaust gas flow in: 30.5 kg/s @ 386º C
Exhaust gas flow out: 30.5 kg/s @ 311º C
Steam capacity: 3760 kg/h
Design pressure/temperature: 10 bar/184º C
Operating pressure/temperature: 7 bar/170º C

Boiler "B" (fire tube):

Exhaust gas flow in: 21.8 kg/s @ 348º C
Exhaust gas flow out: 21.8 kg/s @ 257º C
Steam capacity max.: 3260 kg/h
Design pressure: 10 bar
Operating pressure: 7 bar

That boilers were built up by the same manufacturer.

On the instruction manual, it clearly says that normally dry running is not allowed because there is a danger of boiler damage by soot fire and, that dry running is only allowed with the user´s responsibility.

Some time ago and for some particular reasons, the boiler "A" was operated in "dry running mode" for around one month. In that period, it was stopped twice to wash out the soot accumulated on the fire side.

Nowadays and knowing this is a high risk, we are in the need to run in dry mode the boiler "B" (fire tube) for around one week.

Do you have any comments or advise for me on this subject?

Specific precautions for particular boilers would requirie a thorough review of the design, not possible in this type of post.

It is feasible to design a boiler for dry firing under the design conditions you listed, but it must be a specific design objective from day one. Weld style, material selection, support details, insulation details, pressure part and boiler configuration are all affected by this design requirement.
