Plate vs bar - Fatigue Properties

Plate vs bar - Fatigue Properties

Plate vs bar - Fatigue Properties

(OP)
Hi,

In regards to the product forms, what is a bar? when looking at some fatigue curves in MMPDS, its states Bar 2 x 6 in. Seems to imply its similar to a plate? or should it be a rod...ie. diam. x length?

thanks

RE: Plate vs bar - Fatigue Properties

Skyhawk989;
This is a good question because it caused to me think about this before responding to the obvious. Since I deal with the ASME/ASTM Codes and Standards, I reviewed ASTM A 29 (which is nearly identical to ASTM A 29), typically bars referenced in the above standard are described as;

rounds   7/32" to 10" inclusive
squares  7/32" to 6" inclusive
round cornered squares  7/32" to 8" inclusive
hexagons, octagons
and flats  1/4" to 8" inclusive in width, 13/64" in thickness up to 6" in width, and 0.230" in thickness for over 6" and up to 8" in width

thanks that clears things up abit because I have since seen "round bar" before...however, what defines a plate then? I assumse its different from a "square bar" that you described above?

RE: Plate vs bar - Fatigue Properties

If you have access to ASTM/ASME standards review ASTM/ASME A/SA 20.
