Moving Part/Assy files around.

Moving Part/Assy files around.

Moving Part/Assy files around.

Is there a way of moving a part file from one location to another without the Assy falling over? I don't use PDM works, so it is all filing is done in Windows.

Paul.

RE: Moving Part/Assy files around.

You can use search directories to tell SW where to look.

After a file is moved, you can open the part first before opening the assembly.  When the assembly is saved it will point to the new location.

You can use SW Explorer to change references.

If a SW fails to find a file on its own, it will prompt.  Again, when the assembly is saved it will point to the new location.

Is there no simple way of using (for instance) SW Explorer to move the file and it automatically searches for assemblies where it is located?

BTW - there is "The Tick" on www.omegaowners.com too.

RE: Moving Part/Assy files around.

If you saveas the part when the assembly is open, it will use the newly saved file rather than the original.  The original still resides in the original directory and will need to be deleted.

You can also move the file using windows and prior to opening the SolidWorks assembly (do a single left click), click on references (in the lower right corner of the open dialog) and browse for the moved file in question.

There is no automatic way for solidworks to find a file that has been moved.

RE: Moving Part/Assy files around.

edit:

you can use SWExplorer to copy a file and it will carry the assembly links over to the new part.  You will still have to delete the old part.  Tinker with it, as I recall, it is a little quirky.
