Acceptable ladder rung material ANSI A14.3

Acceptable ladder rung material ANSI A14.3

Can anyone tell me what are acceptable materials to use for fixed ladder rungs according to ANSI A14.3? In particular are HSS acceptable? PIP practises STF05501 shows a 3/4" diameter rung. I believe the intent with that is to indicate this is the minimum accepted size of material that can be used for a rung. It does not state that HSS is an unacceptable material.

ENGMAN47,

Based on this thread794-126138: Acceptable material for ladder rungs, HSS is an acceptable form in ANSI A14.3. However, if you are using PIP STF05501 as a specification, PIP requires ladder rungs to be of ASTM A36/A36M solid round bar material.

Note that HSS is not in the scope of A36. HSS are usually under the scope of ASTM A500.

Thank you doct9960.

I appreciate your response. Very helpful. The information I had up to this point was vague. Your response as cleared up the uncertainies.

RE: Acceptable ladder rung material ANSI A14.3

NFPA-13 had a requirement for access to sprinkler valves higher than 7' AFF, such as a fixed ladder, rungs clamped onto riser or chain and sprocket hanging down.

I can't find this in current codes. Anyone know something about this?
