Use of consumable inserts

Use of consumable inserts

Use of consumable inserts

(OP)
I have a weld procedure with a consumable insert.  The PQR reported the filler metal thickness for the insert at 1/8" and then ER316L filler metal thickness at 3/16".

The consumable insert and the fill/cap pass filler metal have the same F-No. and A-No. (316L).  The WPS does not distinguish between the two and just states that it is qualified for 316L filler metal to a maximum of 5/8".

Since SFA number nor the use of consumable inserts are not essential variables, are they qualified to weld without a consumable insert for 5/8" in thickness?

I appreciate any help you can provide!  Thanks!

RE: Use of consumable inserts

Regarding ASME Section IX only, then your answer is yes.  If you take into account construction codes, your answer may not be yes.  For instance, B31.3 says that if you are going to use a consumable insert, you must qualify it that way.  (I forget the exact language, and don't remember if the converse applies).

Thanks GRoberts for your reply!  I looked up B31.3 and the code allows it as long as the weld procedure was qualified with the consumable insert.
