Generator Stator Inner-Water Cooling, Rotor air-cooled

Generator Stator Inner-Water Cooling, Rotor air-cooled

(OP)
Dear All,

Does anyone have experience with turbine generator cooling like this ;
Stator : Inner Water-Cooled. Use water flowing inside copper tube conductor.
Rotor : Air-cooled.

I have received the proposal from China manufacturer which they deviate the 60 MW STG from air-cooled to this kind of cooling.

Does this type of cooling have any disadvantage, if it is good why today most generators use hydrogen-to-water cooled instead of this type of cooling despite the fact that hydrogen is vunerable to explosion in comparison.

The original technology belong to ABB several tens years ago.

Thank you,

Schwatzernov

RE: Generator Stator Inner-Water Cooling, Rotor air-cooled

Water cooled stators are normally over 200 MW. For 60 MW, air/water cooling is normal.

Many cases of water leakage at the coil ends have been reported in water cooled machines of various OEM's and they require specialist repairers to rectify them.

The idea of water cooling was to extract more power from a given frame.
