Stand Alone DVD Controller Board?

Stand Alone DVD Controller Board?

Stand Alone DVD Controller Board?

(OP)
Hiya everyone,

Does anyone know of an available programmable DVD-player controller board?

Basically I am looking for a standalone solution to connect a DVD-player, LCD screen, audio output, and switches.  As it will be a standalone-PCB I realise it will have to be programmed with an OS, etc...

Does anyone have any ideas of where to start?

Many thanks,

Steve.

RE: Stand Alone DVD Controller Board?

They speak IDE just like IDE hard drives. So look for a any IDE control reader board and start there.

You could probably save about a year by just finding a single board PC that can talk to IDE items directly.

Thanks Keith,

I've found these guys who seem to be heading in the right direction (eWay Technology Systems, Taiwan):

I've e-mailed them for a quote and will post how helpful they are.

Once I have the SBC - it'll obviously need to drive the DVD-ROM (as well as control it's volume, some push-buttons, etc...)  Can you suggest any OS/development methods for achieving this?  Would a version of Embedded Linux be the way forward? - or can this not be used for commercial production as it's open-source?

Many thanks,

Steve.

RE: Stand Alone DVD Controller Board?

No, I believe you CAN use Linux.  You just have to admit it in the correct places.   I would definitely look in the Linux direction.

Seems like you are approaching a good solution from here.

I'd probably get a version going that reads/boots from a DVD.  Once you are happy with all that then turn to your specific application.  You may even want to include a HDD in your development unit.

RE: Stand Alone DVD Controller Board?

You can definitely use Linux in a commercial application. One often-cited example is the fact that the Tivo runs Linux.
