Sony DAT recorder

Sony DAT recorder

(OP)
Hello all,
Has any body else experienced this problem?

A colleague has been using a Sony SIR1000 Dat recorder and used to read the data from the DAT tape using PCSCAN 3. I believe this is the software that came with the recorder.
After reading the tape of say x recordings apparently what you have to do is reset the software to read a tape with only one recording. Otherwise if you try to read a tape with n recordings (where 1<n<x) then it will not work.
The tape with x recordings has now been lost. x>300 recordings apparently and now the software won't read any tapes unless somebody painstakingly makes anew tape with c>300 (although nobody can remember the exact number c should be greater than).
This all seems a bit daft to me, surely their must be some sort of reset command in the software to enable you to read any length tape?
Has anyone come across this problem or knows of a fix?
Many thanks
Andrew
