Bending of unsymmetric thin-walled aluminum

Bending of unsymmetric thin-walled aluminum

(OP)
I need to check if a thin walled unsymmetric aluminum beam can resist bending/ torsion/ etc. I am looking through the aluminum design manual, 2000, and there only appears to be guidance for the case where the load acts through the shear centre, which is not the case here. Any suggestions on how to proceed, or publications/codes i can look at?

Thank you

RE: Bending of unsymmetric thin-walled aluminum

I basically use the same principles as steel and obtain the maximum shears and axial stresses and then compare them to the allowable stress in the aluminum code.

It is interesting though that the subject of torsional streeses is not mentioned in the Aluminum design manuals, but so important in ACI and AISC.

RE: Bending of unsymmetric thin-walled aluminum

A good textbook on advanced solid mechanics should provide the necessary techniques on analyzing an unsymetric section subject to torsion and bending.  I recommend the book we used in Grad school "Advanced Mechanics of Materials" by Boresi and Sidebottom.  You should be able to obtain a copy from McGraw Hill publishing.
