Wood lath, plaster removed, sprinklers beneath?

Wood lath, plaster removed, sprinklers beneath?

Looking at sprinklers in a 100+ year old theatre renovation.

Why does everyone else get the simple, clean warehouse jobs and I stuck with stuff like this?

So the architect tells me they're going to install a suspended ceiling below the wood lath about to the line of molding you see 1'-0" or so beneath.

The attic above the lath is kind of neat, a heavy timber 6 in 12 pitched roof protected using a dry pipe system.  Question is area below the wood lathe... if the space is more then 6" then I feel it would require another level of sprinklers.  I want to tell the owner to simply remove the lath or install the ceiling within 6" of the wood lath.

Do you agree?

Yes.  I agree.  Nothing would allow you to omit the sprinklers in the "interstitial" space.  In these old retrofits I have done, we just had the demo crew remove the lathe as well.

Travis,

I already called, explained the situation and asked if the lathe could be removed.  The owner insists on leaving the lathe up so I'm figuring on using multiple level sprinklers of the kind we use in racks.

You ought to see the wood in this attic though, it's a monument to the Amazon rain forest. With solid piece 16"x12" beams it has to be old growth.

sheetrock over the lathe??

looks like they need to make that ceiling solid for energy reasons, but that is another code.

did you give him the bill with sprinklers in the space verses moving ceiling with in 6 inches and no sprinklers in the space??? that might get his attention

also, will there be enought heat to keep the pipe warm?? or dry piping it????
