Problems converting Inventor dwgs to Autocad 2008 dwgs

Problems converting Inventor dwgs to Autocad 2008 dwgs

(OP)
We have a requirement to supply drawings to one of our suppliers. And since they don't have Inventor, and need actual drawing files to work on, we give them AutoCad Drawings. However, the conversion is not without it's flaws. I have attached two screen shots (The AutoCad Version is attached to this post, and the Inventor version will be to a post following) that show the same detail view. One is with Inventor, the other is after the Inventor dwg has been converted to an Autocad 2008 Mechanical Desktop Drawing file.

As you can see, the leader text next to the ballons is in the wrong position, as well as some of the other leader text.

On a small drawing it's not a huge problem. But on a big multisheet set, it can be time consuming to fix. And time is something we don't have in adundance. We need to be able to convert our Inventor files to Autocad files and end up with a seamless translation.

Is there a way to address this through Inventor's conversion mapping? Or is there an add on program that will allow you to convert easily? I have downloaded DwgTrueView 2008 and have been playing around with that. But I haven't had much success with it yet.

Thanks in advance!

RE: Problems converting Inventor dwgs to Autocad 2008 dwgs

It is in my opinion very poor how Autodesk sell Inventor on its Autocad compatability yet the interaction between the two is actually very bad.
However, are you using the Inventor idw drawing template file and have you tried drawing IN inventor on a dwg border which was available to do from 2008. I cannot say this will fix the problem you have but I found it gives greater interchangability when I have to send Inventor created AutoCad drawings in dwg to my clients.

What version of Inventor are you using If you have 2008 you can draw on the native dwg drawing template which has much less issues when converting to AutoCad than using the Inventor idw file Cannot say it will fix the problem but I havefound it much better and more accurate when I have had to send files to non Inventor clients

Thank you for your replies.

We are currently using Inventor 2008 with SP2 loaded. We do use the "DWG" format and have a template that was from Autocad. However, the issue still exists.

I also agree that the interaction between these two programs is surpirisingly bad. You would think that since they come from the same company, they would be able to communicate better. At my previous employer we routinely used Solid Edge to save drawings to Autocad files with no problem what so ever.
