Side Bend test acc. to ASME IX

Side Bend test acc. to ASME IX

Side Bend test acc. to ASME IX

(OP)
Hello to all,
i would like to know why it is required side bend tests when the base metal thickness used on qualification is over 19 mm instead of Root&Bend tests. Which is the purpose?
Thanks for your supports.
Peter

RE: Side Bend test acc. to ASME IX

Peter113;
Please do not cross post. In answer to your question, the side bend testing is more representative of the through thickness profile of the groove weld versus face and root bend testing. So for groove welds on relatively thick-walled specimens as stated in QW-451, side bend testing is mandatory.

RE: Side Bend test acc. to ASME IX

Also, it's much easier to bend thinner specimens
