how to turn nitrated-steel cylinder for repair job?

(OP)
I’m having problems to get a sufficiently smooth surface and trouble with very short toollife.Tried ceramic inserts and diamondtipped.Material to be turned are injection-cylinders used to inject dies with thermoplastics at very high pressure.Size is upto 4000×300×140mm(lenght×outer×inner).These cylinders are nitrates but the inner is worn, and the most of it is to be replaced by a bimetallic piece.

RE: how to turn nitrated-steel cylinder for repair job?

Nitrided steel is very hard.  The best thing to do is grind, not turn.

I don't think you'll get very good results cuting with a simple lathe bit.  Even if it's hard enough to cut the case you'll find that the surface will chip and spall like glass and it will be difficult to get a good finish.

What you need is a grinder attachment for your lathe.  It attaches to the toolpost and has an electric grinder wheel.
