Hi All,

In my current project, I have a few heat exchangers which are stacked. And Iam using Microprotol for design. But the two exchangers have different design parameters. In Microprotol, if H.Ex is stacked, it assumes both has the same design parameters. Iam struck here.

My idea is to design the top exchanger alone first and add the total weight as dead weight to the second H.Ex which is designed alone.

Will this work? Will this effect the saddle design of the below H.Ex.

How should I Proceed?

Not only does the weight of the top exchanger to be considered but also the applicable wind and shear forces and moments to be considered while designing the supports of the consolodated equipment.

I am unsure how you will manipulate the same in MIcroprotol. In other software like PVElite these can be entered as a user-defined force/ moment/ weight.

OPtion 2 would be to design the 2 exchangers separately in microprotol and USER DEFINE the top and bottom exchanger geometry (i.e thickness and ther dimensions) so that the weight is approximated correctly while designing the supports of the lower exchanger. By this, you will end up with 3 files viz. one considering the top exchanger (without any saddle), one considering the top exchanger (without any saddle),one considering the bottom exchanger (without any saddle) and a third considering a user defined one considering the thicknesses arrived by the other two models.

if the first two models are not very drastically different in design conditions, you may want to consider modelling the two considering same condition in the exchangers which will simplify the analysis and reduce to only 1 model file being generated. IN thi post you have not mentioned what and how differnt are th top and bottom exchangers (Press/temperature/ size).
