part change in drawing

part change in drawing

(OP)
Hi all,
I need to creat a new part/drawing. It is similar to an existing documented part/drawing. Up to last week or so, I was able to open the existing drawing, save as new part number and close. I would temporarily rename the old part model so when I open the newly copied drawing, it would not be able to find the driving part, and give me the option to find it. I would then browse to the new part. It seems of late I am not given the option to browse to a new part. The newly copied drawing (breath) opens with the view boxes "X"ed out. "Find references" reports "not found". Is there a switch somewhere in Tools I need to move. Very strange as I used to do this all the time.

RE: part change in drawing

You can use SW Explorer to change references in assemblies and drawings.

I havent used explorer since 2005. I've always found it to be a bit too quirky for me. I'll try it again however. Thanks

RE: part change in drawing

Pack and Go is another alternative.

cheers

Thanks CBL
Seems strange I have to alter my methods though. So no one knows of some option switch somewhere. I cant find anything relevant unde Tools....

RE: part change in drawing

When you do a "Save as" on a drawing or assembly, you can copy and rename references as well.  Note the "References" button in the "Save as" dialog.

RE: part change in drawing

Open the part, then open its associated drawing. Make the changes to the part, then 'save-as'. Go to the drawing, it should now be referencing the new part. 'Save-as' the drawing.

RE: part change in drawing

As you open the drawing (or really just before), click on the references button in the lower right hand corner of the file>open window.  Do a single left click on the drawing you would like to open and then go to the references button.  This will allow you to change the file that is referenced in the drawing.

RE: part change in drawing

I agree with hotiron that this is strange and very frustrating. Why should it be necessary to go through additional steps when it was so convenient the other way?

RE: part change in drawing

I think I found it. System Options - Advanced - Dismissed Messages. I must have dismissed the message. This solved my problem, hope it solves yours. Sylvia

Tools.options,system options, advanced?
I do not see an advanced tab of selection option
SW2007?

RE: part change in drawing

TheTick has the right idea.  You didn't mention if you were using PDMWorks or not.

If you are not using the vault, use PacknGo on the drawing (this will grab the contents of the drawing), and copy it to another folder.

If you are using the vault, simply open the drawing for viewing, but do not take ownership.

"I havent used explorer since 2005."  It changed in 2006 or 2007, so you ought to give it another shot because it looks similar to Windows Explorer and it is easy to use.

Since it is only 1 part, I wouldn't use SW Explorer though.   Make sure the part and drawing are in the same folder.  In WINDOWS explorer, right-click the part and choose Solidworks > Rename.

This will find the assemblies and drawings where the files are used and whenever you rename it, it keeps all links to the part.

RE: part change in drawing

In 2008 you can dismiss messages. Sorry, I didn't know you were in 2007.

Thanks to all
I guess I'll have to change my process. Thanks to felix7502 and smcadman recently. Didnt know about Rclick in explorer to rename.  I guess its a great opportunity to learn new things, though I'd like to understand why the old things dont work
