Material for alligator shear blades

Material for alligator shear blades

Hi all,

What steel would you suggest to be used in 1000t press (hydraulic alligator shear blade system). Dimensions of blades are 22.5x7x2.75"
Alligator system is used of cutting of metal scrap. I know for DIN X210Cr12 and X165CrMoV12. Any other suggestions if we want to extend life time of blades. These blades can work up to 500 working hours.

Regards!

RE: Material for alligator shear blades

One should know by previous experience the microstructure, hardness and performance behavior of previously used unsatisfactory materials. Then one could discuss with tool steel manufacturers how to improve.

RE: Material for alligator shear blades

I would certainly look at Astralloy-V ~  disclosure ~  I sell it including several shear blade applications.

RE: Material for alligator shear blades

What is / are the failure modes?

Does it have be steel?

How about steel with an insert of another material?

@ macmil

Thanks for advice, but I think that this material is not available in this region (Mediteranian).

@ tomwalz

We were looking for TC inserts for blades that cut aluminum and copper wires. Unfortunately, without result. I don't know if TC can be used in applications like these (very high pressures?)
