Dear all,
How to calculate for pump head.
Or any factor that we need to be consideration.

Basically it is the vertical height from supply to the delivery point plus all the friction and associated losses. However, in some cases this is can be a very complex undertaking to a very simple question - I suggest you have a look at the following links which will give you a start point.

The best book that I have seen on this subject for beginners and non-engineers is the Cameron Hydraulic Data book.  It used to be published by Ingersoll-Rand but now apparently it is published by Flowserve.  http://www.flowserve.com/eim/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=3378dc74f59aa010VgnVCM1000004f181eacRCRD&vgnextfmt=default

Another one, even more basic in hydraulics was the "Durco Pump Engineering Manual" but I cannot find it on the Internet.

Ask a qualified engineer to do it for you.

gepman has the goods.  Cameron Hydraulic Data or Crane's Tech paper No. 410 are generally the two documents that explain TDH requirements.  I've also used the Durco Manual as well. All three are good.

Get a good Engineer to teach you - you will be amased by how many warranty claims we get called to where we have to recalculate the entire systems and trim Impellers to control pumps - you tend to find a numnber of people always add a 10% service factor and pumps run nowhere near peak efficiency points resulting in premature failure, and increased operational costs !!

It is essential you get to understqnd exactly how these calc's are done - the component that normally fails on a badly designed/specified system is the rotating equipment (pump).....

Only 10% - don't forget the few extra percent that the owners wanted, the process engineer added, the application engineer added, and the bit extra on impeller diameter just in case.
