Metal Core Arc Welding

Metal Core Arc Welding

Metal Core Arc Welding

I am curious as to how the AISC's prequalified weld tables deal with metal core arc welding. Is metal core arc welding another name for FCAW or MCAW? The prequalified tables only have SMAW, GMAW, FCAW . Thanks.

RE: Metal Core Arc Welding

Clansman;
This may be a nomenclature question but what exactly are you asking regarding metal core? Metal core could apply to SMAW - flux external, or solid wire core welding processes, GTAW, GMAW.

RE: Metal Core Arc Welding

I use ESAB Coreweld 70, a metal-cored wire, AWS class E70C-6M, code A5.18. The code is the same as solid wire GMAW.

Metengr,

I was on the phone with a fabricator and I asked him what welding process they use in the shop so we can detail the shop drawings correctly. He responded by simply saying "Metal Core" ... I guess from dbooker's response, I will use the prequalified detailing of GMAW.

RE: Metal Core Arc Welding

Metal cored wires are available for GTAW and SAW processes as well as GMAW.

RE: Metal Core Arc Welding

Clansman,

Review the Essential Variables for both, as related to the manufacturers recommendations
(and label on the wire)

They must be welding flat. or horiz., not sure thats a good field wire.

-Doesn't AISC refer you to AWS D1.? (for SS or CS) Structural?
