Moving newly created parts in an assembly??

Moving newly created parts in an assembly??

Moving newly created parts in an assembly??

(OP)
Why when I'm in an assembly and want to create a new part in the assembly and move it along the X-axis does it move it along the Z-axis. Any ideas? I'm new to Solidworks and I'm trying to figure some of these things out on my own.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Moving newly created parts in an assembly??

When you create a part in an assy, it automatically creates "in place" mates. If needed you can suppress oe even delete those mates and add your own.

cheers

So what your saying is that these mates make the part move in the complete opposite direction that I want them to??

Such as I want to move it in the X axis but it moves along the Z axis instead.

Is this a correct assumption?

RE: Moving newly created parts in an assembly??

How are you moving the component?  If you are just dragging on the screen, it will move based on whatever orientation you are looking at.  If the part has inplace mates as CBL described, the part will be "locked" into a specific orientation.  It is best to create parts as standalone pieces and insert them into an assembly.  If in-context relations are necessary, they can be used sparingly.

RE: Moving newly created parts in an assembly??

I'm creating the part in the assembly. I have an ASME F & D head and I'm trying to create a part in the assembly of the head and extrude it so that it conforms to the inside contour of the head.

I go to: Insert; Component; New Part.

Is this the correct way or is there another way to do it?

RE: Moving newly created parts in an assembly??

I'm moving the part in the sketch phase after I've created the shape. It starts at the origin and I need to move it 23.75 from the origin, which is where the part starts and then I want to extrude it to the inside contour of the head.

RE: Moving newly created parts in an assembly??

Dim the whole sketch to define it. Dim it 23.75 to the origin.
