WOOD RETAINING WALL DESIGN

WOOD RETAINING WALL DESIGN

WOOD RETAINING WALL DESIGN

(OP)
Can anyone direct me to design aids for wood retaining walls?  Charts/software etc.?  I am designing an 8' high wall with no-slope or surcharge behind.  I will replace clay soils behind with drainable bankrun or the like...

Thank you ...

SlideRuleEra,

An excellent link BUT when I tried to print it out I got unintelligible garble. Is this Australian publication perhaps coded in some way that makes it un printable on U.S. based computers ?  Should I copy and paste it into Adobe Reader  perhaps ?

still, it was worth the star.

RE: WOOD RETAINING WALL DESIGN

RWF7437 - I just tried downloading it and printing; had no problem. Do try saving the file to your hard drive then printing from there.

RE: WOOD RETAINING WALL DESIGN

thanks sliderule, i'll try that. it may not be very useful here in Oregon since the Wallabies and Eucalyptus trees left  during the Cretaceous.

I'll bet my K&E Log Log Decitrig to your Picket Pocket Model that i can find some use for it when global warming takes full effect though.

RE: WOOD RETAINING WALL DESIGN

RWF7437,

Sone PDFs composed using Wordperfect fonts do not print correctly if you don't have them on your computer.

Try the following link to download some of the more common WP fonts.

Hope this helps.

Its hard to believe that this is the only reference around...I've seen it already.   Such a common retaining wall with such little design reference.  No wonder they fail so commonly.  Thanks for your help.  I've hit some college libraries and still nothing.

RE: WOOD RETAINING WALL DESIGN

"Such a common retaining wall with such little design reference.  No wonder they fail so commonly."

It is suggested that they fail NOT because little is known or published about how to design them but rather because:

Wood is a natural material with widely varied properties

Not all important properties can be predicted

These properties change with time and loading

wood can be attacked by insects, water, weather, plants (tree roots for example), chemicals, rot, and burrowing animals

good quality, durable heart grade wood is expensive and hard to find

walls are often subject to overloads, such as heavy equipment, which were not anticipated in the design
