F51 - Duplex SS HT and properties

(OP)
Hello Friends!

I have a question regarding SA182-F51 duplex SS.
We have a customer asking for charpy values of 25/33Ft-lb at -50 deg F.  We have no exposure to this steel and we are not sure if this is achievable.  In fact we need to carry out heat treatment trials to achieve a 35 -50% Ferrite structure, which is another requirement.  My question is; Will it be possible to achieve the specified Charpy value at the specified -50 deg F?? By what heat treatment can we achieve both Charpy values and microstructure? Any thoughts to share??

Thanks in anticipation,

You don't have much latitude, if you follow ASME SA 182

for F51 duplex steel, per Table 1

solution treatment at 1870 deg F min, followed by liquid quenching.

Run a test coupon per the above, and see what happens.

RE: F51 - Duplex SS HT and properties

I would suggest that you stay near the min temp, maybe 1900F.
You will need to be about 40-45% ferrite, any lower and you will get some strange results.  A fine structure will help you.
I don't know if you will make the impacts.  Only testing will tell.
