Damper Leakage Test

Damper Leakage Test

Damper Leakage Test

(OP)
I am planning on performing an AIR leakage test on a butterfly style damper intended for GAS service. My plan is to fasten blind flanges to both sides of the damper. One blind flange will have an air connection to connect to a air compressor. The other blind flange will have a flow meter connected to it to measure the air leakage. The leakage test will be performed while the damper is in the closed position and the test pressure range is between 0.5 psi to 5 psi.

I was hoping that someone could enlighten me as to whether this was a reasonable approach, or whether there are better, alternative methods to testing for air leakage. I was also concerned as to whether this setup may present any safety issues.

RE: Damper Leakage Test

simar187,
with such a low pressure, I don't see any safety concerns...

May I ask how large the butterfly damper is and how much air leakage are you allowing?

Do you follow any reference standard (e.g. API 598, ISO 5208, IEC 60534-4...) or so?

Thanks and Regards,   'NGL

RE: Damper Leakage Test

The size of the damper being tested for leakge is 16 inches. Furthermore, the standard I am trying to achieve is ANSI/FCI 70-2, class IV.

I forgot to include the leakage I am allowing. Since it is a Class IV, I am looking at 0.01% of damper capacity which is roughly about 4-5 SCFM.
