Minimum Conc. Column Size

Minimum Conc. Column Size

(OP)
Are there any ACI provisions for minimum (tied) column width?  I'm trying to match 8 inch CMU with an 8x16 column and I know it not the easiest to construct with 1.5 inch clearance.  Would there be an opportunity to reduce the cover to 3/4 inch, similar to a conc. wall.  I wonder what the tilt-up association uses for tied wall piers/columns.

TIA

RE: Minimum Conc. Column Size

Check the section on slenderness effects in compression members in ACI 318.

RE: Minimum Conc. Column Size

Be careful with your fire ratings on a column that small as well.

RE: Minimum Conc. Column Size

I've gone down to 10" columns in stairwells - but not smaller - you'd have trouble getting your ties to fit and your vertical bars get so bunched together that you might have trouble getting concrete consolidated below.

RE: Minimum Conc. Column Size

We have 8-inch wide columns on many projects.  They're a pain but possible.
