sheet piling for maintenance of traffic

sheet piling for maintenance of traffic

(OP)
We are working on a maintenance of traffic scheme for a 2 lane rural road that will be widened to a 5 lane urban road.  We have 60" and 72" culverts that must be constructed through an existing embankment and under the proposed widened embankment while maintaining traffic.

My question is this: Is it feasible to excavate the upstream side of the existing embankment with a vertical cut of around 25' using sheet piling to retain the soil.  If it is feasible, approximately how deep below the bottom of the cut would the sheet piling need to be driven.

I know this is a vague description, but we are not designing the piling. We just want to make sure not to propose a scheme that is unreasonable.

RE: sheet piling for maintenance of traffic

It mainly depends on the soil conditions, but I would say it is unlikely that you can do what you are proposing without either tieback anchors or internal bracking to support the sheet piles.

You should hire an engineer to give you a quick look a the conditions before you propose something.  Then if you want to proceed the engineer can finalize the design.

That is the way I work for several contractors.

jeremyk,

Any shoring contractor worth their salt will have an engineer either on staff or in good relations to be able to give you a proposal and preliminary design.

If you are working in Indiana, drop me an email.

we are only serving as the roadway designer and will not be doing any geotechnical design or overseeing the construction portion of this project.  all I want to know is if the assumption we have made for one of our maintenance of traffic schemes is feasible.  at this point, my understanding is that in order to retain an existing embankment at a max height of approx. 25' with sheet piling, some type of tie-backs or anchors would be required.
