NDT testing of new 8" gas pipe

NDT testing of new 8" gas pipe

What are the ASME B31.3 NDT testing requirements for new above grade 8” diam. piping for gasoline in a terminal with a max. working pressure of 150 psi? The pipe has not been used. I am looking for guidance on how many of the welds should be X-rayed/mag particle tested and what is normally the spacing between UT locations.

RE: NDT testing of new 8" gas pipe

The minimum requirement is 5% RT. Refer to 341.4.1 of B31.3.

Thanks stanweld, I am out of town and do not have my B31.3. Does It give a minimum for the amount of UT that has to be performed as a baseline on the pipe and elbows?

RE: NDT testing of new 8" gas pipe

I/m not sure what you are asking. B31.3 does not require UT of pipe & fittings (base metals). The base materials specifications provide these requirements.

stanweld thanks and I am trying not to sound dumb, but I think I have passed that point. Should I be following API 570 for the UT information? I do have this guideline with me.

RE: NDT testing of new 8" gas pipe

API 570 is used for inspection of pipe in service and for repairs. I assume that you wish to determine the original thickness of pipe/fittings installed. That's an Owner's decision. If you are not the Owner, it is not your concern unless specified in the Contract, in which case the locations and frequency of tests should be specified.

Thanks stanweld, you answered my questions. Have a good day.

RE: NDT testing of new 8" gas pipe

B31.3 is for newly constructed piping assemblies, it does not address corrosion monitoring guidelines. I think that is what you are talking about. Base lines for corrosion monitoring is up to the owner and should be specified. API 570 is the piping inspection code for inservice piping.
