Concept of "Transfer Force"

Concept of "Transfer Force"

Concept of "Transfer Force"

(OP)
Could someone familiar with the concept please elaborate on "Transfer Force"?  It is normally designated as:

/___
    /

Its units are Kips or KN.  Normally, we place the "transfer force" on a connection between two horizontal members in structural drawings to indicate what the connection has to be designed for in tension.  Is "Transfer Force" the force that actually goes through the connection? It is apparently not exactly the axial force in the member, but the DIFFERENCE in axial forces between two adjacent horizontal members.  The transfer force from one member to the next member might not be the same, because of the force might go into the horizontal component of vertical bracing in that particular member?  When do you normally place the "transfer force" on connections?  Is it only on the connection with the highest "transfer force", or on all connections?  Can "transfer forces" be designated for vertical members as well?

RE: Concept of "Transfer Force"

Good question. I have been meaning to ask this very same question. Eagerly awaiting the responses.
