Exciter phase fault protection

Exciter phase fault protection

Dear All.
We are looking for to some exciter phase fault protection.
Please see attached scheme ( red colored).
This scheme of static AVR of 375MVA units. Old protection board sended many unwanted trips and now is disconnected.
Actually we need protection against line to line fault and phase disconnection. Line to ground/earth protected by
64R ( rotor gound/earth fault 100% injection principle).
Vendor of old protection not so want help us and we check
other options ( cost is not issue).
Thanks for any ideas, recommendations.
Best Regards.

RE: Exciter phase fault protection

It sounds like you want some basic overcurrent and under voltage protection.  A Beckwith 3425A would do this as well as a Basler 951, and many SEL relays.  Since you don't need differential, just over current and phase undervoltage when it is running any of these could be set up to provide basic protection for the exciter.  You would need to make sure the relays would work for the harmonic content they would see as well as block the under voltage when it is not running.

Hi Pwrengrds.
Thank you for reply.
Isn't so simple, isn't generator, it's exciter ( yes it's 3-ph AC source). In parallel with this forum, we check with companies like to GE, ABB, Alstom, on this momemnt no results.
Sorry, only one recommendation: replace AVR to new one, that include this protection module. Nice solution, we think maybe replace also generatorwinky smile.
Regards.

RE: Exciter phase fault protection

Slava,

You might want to contact the Basler Exciter people (unless this is a Basler that is causing you problems!.  They make large exciters and might be have a one-off solution they could work out with you.  They purchased the Cutler-Hammer (was Westinghouse) exciter division not too long ago, in addition to their own line of exciters.  Just a thought..
