Simply supported cap cap plate connection

Simply supported cap cap plate connection

(OP)
I have a question regarding cap plate connections.  I've had some connections where I had a simply supported beam bearing on a TS column with a cap plate.  I typically check the plate for local yielding and crippling of the TS wall per AISC 13 and the cap plate bending stress.  However I typically specify 4 3/4" diameter A325 bolts since I assume there is no moment transferred to the connection.  I know excessive deflection, hence rotation at the supports can cause a couple on the bolts, but I typically keep the deflection below L/360, assuming this won't produce excessive tension forces in the bolts.  Would you say this is reasonable for a simply supported cap plate connection?

RE: Simply supported cap cap plate connection

Yes, I think it is reasonable.  Hope so, because it is the way I have done it for a lot of years.
