Wall thickness calc induction hardened pipe "Ultra 500S"
Wall thickness calc induction hardened pipe "Ultra 500S"
(OP)
Is it possible to calculate the wall thickness required for induction hardened pipe "Ultra 500S", when given the following stress values for the hardened pipe: Yield strength is 50 ksi and Tensile strength is 80 ksi.
Given:
P = 100 bar
Temp = 50 Deg Celsius
E = 1
D = 10.75 inches
c = 0.04 inches
Using ASME B31.3, I can calculate a wall thickness using pipe selected from Table A1 (i.e. A106 Gr B, which has min Tensile strength as 60 ksi and min Yield strength as 35 ksi and Basic allowable stress S = 20 ksi at metal temperature) BUT what S value do I use for an induction hardened pipe?
Thanks
Paul

RE: Wall thickness calc induction hardened pipe "Ultra 500S"
Depends on your safety factor and code your using.
However if you look at A106B Gr B you quoted then
35/20 = 1.75
therefore 50/1.75 =28.57ksi (allowable stress)
as a very rough approximate.

Since you are using ASME B31.3, you need to determine if this pipe material specification falls under one of the endorsed material specifications listed in the Appendix. You cannot take credit for induction hardening in terms of allowable stress, it is a function of the substrate material specification.
