SW2008 Revision Parametrics

SW2008 Revision Parametrics

SW2008 Revision Parametrics

We just got going on 2008 and there seems to be an issue with the "Revision" property parametrics.  Anyone know of an issue here or have the same experience?  We are @ SP1.1.

Thanks,
Mike

RE: SW2008 Revision Parametrics

Can you give more specifics of the problem?
Are you using PDMWorks or similar?

cheers

Sorry, I know I didnt put much info out there, had just across it and thought Id get this rolling while I did some troubleshooting.  We will one day be using PDM, but not currently.  That being said, the issue is I think due to my company's fault.  Bascially, someone decided in the days of yore that for an initial dwg release we would put a first entry in the Rev table designated "-" and describe it as the initial release.  I dont agree, but it was one of those things implemented and ingrained before I arrived.  Well, anyway, we never had to deal with issues as, from what I can recall, SW2007 and before seemed to work with that and from what I can tell, track the Rev property letter incrementally as opposed to what appears in 2008 to be absolute based on the number of Rev entries with the first being "A".  ie If you have 3 revision entries, the Rev property is at "C".  Personally, if my initial deduction is correct, I like, because it will give us fire-power to eliminate this practice we have of putting Rev "-" in the rev table.

Maybe I'm way off on this, but like I said, in my inital investigation and recollection of the pre-SW2008 era products, this seemes to be what I am observing?  Also, I couldnt find a setting in SW options to address this (doestn mean these isnt one there) so this is where I am on it.  I think I recall the PDM allows some pretty good customization of the Rev scheme, but not sure how this fits in with it as we have not really done much to get that going yet.

Can I get confirmation or correction on this ad hoc though process?

Thanks, appreciate it,
Mike

RE: SW2008 Revision Parametrics

Your Admin for PDMW can create a "list" of revisions in PDMW. Manually start the list with "-", then A, B, etc.

That's what I thought when I had briefly looked at it (with regard to the custom revision hierarchy.)  But I honestly cant say we are looking right around the corner at integrating PDMW and I think we would be wise to remain within SW functionality.  Can you confirm or correct my deduction that SW2008 in itself will not function under the scheme that has Rev "-" in the Rev Table?  This all makes sense to me also due to the fact that our standards documentation indicates that the 1st entry into the rev table is "A".  So you know if you can assign he revision hierarchy for SW2008 w/o going thu PDMW?

Thanks again, really appreciate it,
Mike

RE: SW2008 Revision Parametrics

In SW without PDMW, you may type whatever you like as a rev.

You can type whatever you want in the Rev letter of Rev Table, and the property changes, but as soon as you add another Rev, SW2008 takes control back and appears to assign the next letter based on the number of Revs that have been created .... ie 3 Revs (A-C), the next one, 4th one would be "D".  You can go and change that "D" to an "X" or whatever you want, but then when you insert the next Rev, 5th one, the Rev letter is "E".  To me, this manual change is a problem in that if you are manually typing in letters, you will also have SW2008 in a power struggle with you whenever you make additional Revs.  Not sure if there is a setting within SW that can address this, but I doubt it and havent come across any.

Thanks again, I love all the posts, really helps learn more and more,
Mike
