ASME Filler Metal

ASME Filler Metal

ASME Filler Metal

(OP)
I posted this some time ago and just wanted to see if there was any new input. I have also found out that the some of the test fixture parameters have changed.
Thanks

In the Summer 1979 Addeda to the 1977 ASME Code Edition the Mn requirement for E7018 filler metal was changed from 1.25% to 1.60% max.  My question is, has there been any code cases issued to allow the use of the newer filler metal to be used on code work prior to the change.  The major filler metal manufacturer we work with will not make this filler metal to the older requirement.

qaalien;
It has been a while since I worked on the nuclear side of the business. My question to you is why can't you use the more recent filler metal composition, provided there is no change in mechanical properties and it is the same F-No and A-No as in the past?

We make repair parts for older nuclear plants. The customer gives us a code year and addenda to work to and the materials must meet those specifications. I have gotten replies on both sides of the fence some say yes you have to use the old ones and some say no you can use the new ones. They made the product better so go figure.
Thanks for your response.

RE: ASME Filler Metal

What about hand picking lots of consumables with the chemistry you need?  For example in reviewing actual MTR's for some E7018 I see I have received several lots with Mn at 1.10

RE: ASME Filler Metal

If the F and A numbers didn't change for these "revised" electrodes, I would not have expected there to be an ASME IX issue.

RE: ASME Filler Metal

When faced with the same issue (Also watch out for the Mo level change from earlier specification on 316 stainless steel electrodes), our ASME N stamp inspector, (as a material supplier we did not have an AI on site), and some customers ordering parts to the old ASME Section III codes told us that we didn't need to procure welding consumbles to old revisions of the code since weld rod is generally a stock item, not typically made to order.  So we switched to using the current year instead of older years, and none of our other customers complained.  Also, if you are stuck with an older year of the code and need 7018, we had luck with Lincoln 7018N MR, but it has been 2-3 years.
