Zinc Plated 10.9 Fasteners

Zinc Plated 10.9 Fasteners

Zinc Plated 10.9 Fasteners

(OP)
I'm looking for a source for zinc plated hex head 10.9 fasteners, (socket heads are not desireable) and having some difficulty finding suppliers.

I'm aware of potential issues with hydrogen embrittlement, but am under the impression that proper processing can eliminate this concern... Presumably something any reputable bolt manufacturer would do as a matter of course

Am I correct in my understanding of the embrittlement issue, and could anyone suggest a source for hex heads?

Thanks in advance

RE: Zinc Plated 10.9 Fasteners

It is never safe to presume that any fastener supplier is reputable, or will do the required post-plating bake to reduce the possibility of hydrogen embrittlement, or if they do the bake, that they have done it correctly.

I was able to find zinc plated 10.9 hex heads on Fastenal.com.

RE: Zinc Plated 10.9 Fasteners

You are correct regarding strength, plating, embrittlement, and relief.  You may be open to unreliability with who is and who is not reputable.

What quantity do you need?  If it is small, then distributors like Fastenal or even McMaster-Carr stock these items.  Buyer beware.

If you need large quantities, then you can work with a manufacturer directly.  Large manufacturers include Acument, SPS, and Nucor.

RE: Zinc Plated 10.9 Fasteners

While class 10.9 is not as susceptible as 12.9 to hydrogen embrittlement, I would insist that the fastener source provide information on successful torque-tension testing where the parts have been loaded to 80% of ultimate torque that is maintained for at least 48 hours.

QQ-Z-325C Zinc coating, electrodeposited requires 75% of ultimate "notched" tensile strength of the material for at least 200 hours (4 times the 48 hour). Another option is 115% of the maximum designed load of the part for at least 200 hours.

RE: Zinc Plated 10.9 Fasteners

I would recommend conformance to these:

SAE/USCAR-5 AVOIDANCE OF HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT OF STEEL

and

SAE/USCAR-7 DEEMBRITTLEMENT VERIFICATION TEST

Due to some past experiences, and at least one serious problem, with various distributers of fasteners, I've got some doubts about such sources, and would much rather deal with a manufacturer (if possible)

however thanks for the specs, much appreciated. I'll look into those.
