High-velocity impact on sandwich structure

High-velocity impact on sandwich structure

High-velocity impact on sandwich structure

(OP)
Dear all,

i am simulating High-velocity impact on sandwich structure in Abaqus. Could any one please guide me how can I simulate it?

1) how do i model sandwich structure? I saw there is a "skin" command in Abaqus, can i just add the skins to the core by using this command?

2) What should i do after modelling the sandwich structure?

3) Can i ask for an example from you guys?

Thank you!

Please, can someone sharing their experience with me?

RE: High-velocity impact on sandwich structure

balflearlee,

You seem impatient??

I unfortunately cannot help you directly, as i have never used abaqus.
However, your situation is that you are looking at projectile impatation on honeycomb panels. This is a situation on auxilliary fuel tanks for military transport aircraft.
A lot depends upon the angle of the impact, and can in a lot of cases simply bounce off.
Modelling ths structure should be as normal for a honeycomb core sandwich panel.

Now a big but; your situation is about as far removed from a linear static situation as possible. To get any sensible results from FE that match anywhere near test, you need to run a dynamic analysis.

There are companies who specialise in the particular realm of interest, i would contact them, as you seem a little light on FE to even start the project your talking about (no offense).

RE: High-velocity impact on sandwich structure

For a lightweight structure that uses honeycomb as a core material it is extremely likely that a "high velocity" impact will penetrate the skins and pass through. Hence, what are you trying to get out of the analysis ? Levels of damage, residual velocity, deflections ? Also, if 40818 is correct and it is a fuel tank stucture then it is a whole new ball game as the impactor-structure, fluid-structure and impactor-fluid interaction all becomes important. In the past I've been involved in such studies and used specialist hydrodynamic codes using Lagrane, Euler, SPH and ALE methods that may be beyond what Abaqus has to offer.

So you need to provide more information such as :-

What velocity ?
What mass of impactor ?
What results are required ?
Is there a fuel tank involved ?

Then we might be able to answer if Abaqus can provide you with a solution.

RE: High-velocity impact on sandwich structure

Jordanlaw seems correct, but check out this site:

www.materials-sciences.com

They have done some high-impact analyses on various composite structures.  Not sure if they were using Abaqus, but I do know that was one of the available tools.

RE: High-velocity impact on sandwich structure

I used to work for Materials Sciences and in the past they were working with LS-DYNA for ballistics and had an add in http://www.materials-sciences.com/dyna.shtml.  For many other simulations they used Abaqus and may have transitioned.  They also do some consultancy work and may be able to help.  Hope this helps.
