EMD 645 - Need Fuel Flow Meter Help
(OP)
Hello -
I have several stationary EMD 645's diesel engine generators on which I would like to install fuel flow meters on both the inlet and outlet fuel lines.
I expect the max flow rate to be less than 5 gpm. The meter needs to have a pulse output, although 4-20 ma may be acceptable, to talk to our SCADA syste. A register would be nice; an electronic (digital) registered would be preferred, if available.
Could anyone recommend an appropriate flow meter to use in this application? (These engines are in the USA).
Thanks!

Obviously, actual fuel consumption will be calculated from flow differences (in vs. out) so metering errors will be compuonded and be further augmented by high turn-down ratios also being involved. In order to get decent accuracy on the calculated fuel consumption, only positive displacement meters can satisfy these needs. Be careful to size them properly (no larger than necessary with only minimal sizing margins) since oversizing the meters will jeopardize both accuracy and turn-down.
On these engines, actual idling vs. full load fuel consumption rates will involve turn-down ratios greater than 50:1. It would be wise to pay attention to temperatures. Depending on the specific installation, in vs. out fuel temperature differences can affect the accuracy of the calculated fuel consumption significantly, so depending on your accuracy needs, temperature compensation may be needed, too.
