Esterification Liquid liquid speration in Receiver

(OP)
Need a little help.  We have a process to esterify a alcohol and acid.  The alcohol is in excess.  The reaction temperature is ran above the boiling point of the alcohol so it carries over to the receiver.  Since we generate water with the reaction we have to fill up the receiver with boiled alcohol and the water splits and falls to the bottom.  Once the receiver fills enough with alcohol and some water it starts to finaly return the alcohol to the vessel. The receiver has a return leg 2/3 the way up the side.  I would like to start filling the receiver up with water so that the alcohol will split and return to the vessel as designed.  So as to not waste as much alcohol.  Long winded explanation but my question is how to design the receiver with the return leg and a traping system to ensure that the water doesn't return to the vessel.
