Hi,
I am new process engineer in refining. Can anyone suggest me link for tools/ softwares to generate process flow diagrams .

RE: process flow diagrams

Hi there:

For simple cases, one can use MS Office (MS PowerPoint) and start biulding a simple librray of engineering components/processes.

Thanks,

PowerPoint or Visio are good for PFD's.  Excel works also.

I use AutoCAD.  That is the standard in which all diagrams are drawn, at least in my workplace.  Before I learned AutoCAD, I just used microsoft paint for PFD's and P&ID's.

RE: process flow diagrams

Depends on who is available to you.  If you're doing all the drawing yourself, then one of the above softwares is the way to go.  If you have a piping department, the easiest way is to hand-sketch something and let them draw it.  Then mark it up/correct it as you iterate towards perfection.

On the other hand, some simulation softwares will allow you to make an excellent PFD.  Depends on the package.  I can personally vouch for ProMax (bre.com) being one that lends itself towards doing this activity.  If you are designing a process, and creating a simulation to aid in that design, the software package might be able to produce an excellent first pass, which you can then have CAD'd up or something.

Onwards,

Matt

RE: process flow diagrams

Hi,

I would use Visio for this, as I have done a few times on assets I have worked on. It is easy to use and also has the benefit that it uses easily available software. That means that if you move on etc, someone else can update the drawing easily without having to get lots of fancy software installed on their machine. I have attached the latest one I drew for one of our assets. It is offshore, but gives an idea of how we layed it out
