Would anyone know of a good recruiting firm?

I have gotten interviews and even job offers with recruiting firms but for some reason they never seem to be as successes full with the business end (the $$ and cents) as if I just found a job myself.

For example, I just this week went for an interview across country through a firm and everything was taken care of, the interview was great. They guys interviewing me said I have unique training which fits their company well and they would hire me if all went well with the recruiter and they would even give me some money to move...they then took me out for dinner and we hung out the rest of the day… I thought I had this one nailed…

The only negative thing they said was that they don’t like recruiters and said some will normally screw things up... and they told me that if things down work out to contact them in a year smile after the recruiter contract expired because they liked me.

Now that I am home I got a call from the recruiter saying that he didn’t think things where going to work out. What the heck happened???!!

Does anyone have the names of successful recruiters?

Well I used Aerotek succesfully but as you'll have seen in the other thread others may not have had the same experience.

I would use a firm that doesn't have a headhunter to help you.  I prefer to keep mine.

Sounds like they have a really f---ed up relationship with the recruiter.  I mean, really, how difficult of a contract is it?

We need someone with these skills.  We are willing to pay this much.  If we hire a candidate that you send our way, we'll give you X% or X flat-fee.

What's left to screw up?

Definitely call the recruiter and ask for a complete debrief.  Press him for exactly why he thinks it isn't going to work out.

Then tell him destroy all copies of your resume, never submit you to any other client and never call you again.

The very best recruiters are useless.  Most are scum - at least that has been me experience.

Aerotek = warm body brokers who can't read a map or read a resume

As I said somewhere else.  Aerotek the Wal-mart of job shops.  They helped put some of the best recruiters out of business.  One of the reason is the MBA/accountants than run compaines these days. They see Aeroteck low rates and thats all their interested in. Some of the recruiters I know don't even deal with some companies that use Aerotek. They say they can't work for Aeroteks overhead.
Most shops use to specialize in engineers and designers. Aerotek does engineers, bus drivers, orange pickers etc. etc.
I have got calls from Aerotek recuriters wanting to submit me for jobs designing ICs. I explain to them I do megawatts not millwatts and the explanation last a month or two.

I think most of their people come from call centers and McDonalds.

Aerotek will butcher your resume and "format" it to their liking.  I have seen night & comparisons of "formatted" resumes and original resumes during interviews.  I was amazed at how poorly some of the modified resumes were.

I prefer ManPower and OfficeTeam from a hiring perspective, and ManPower as a job seeker.  I haven't needed to use any service in over 12yrs (4 jobs) however.  I only used them when I transitioned from East Coast to West Coast USA.

    I've had some recent brushes w/ Daxcon.  They did a good job of reading and understanding my resume and matching up jobs.

    It's really hard to find National (engineering focused) firms, at least in the US.  About the best you can do is look at online job offerings for the region you are looking to move, and try to pick out some of the job placement firms from the listings.  If you already know of a good, local headhunter in your area, they may be willing to refer you to another headhunter in the new location.  I'm sure they have already decided on their percentages for referrals.

    When I relocated, I took 2wks vacation to scope out the Los Angeles area and surrounding cities first.  Its one thing to read about locations, its an entirely different experience to see those locations during the weekdays and weekend nights.  You quickly find the places you do not want to live, and where is tolerable.

    I have had luck with PDS, Omega, Cadstar, and some others.  Their reputations tend to be mixed, but they have come through for me.  I've never had luck with Manpower, and now wouldn't even try, as they ALWAYS seem to offer a rate far below what the others do for equivalent positions.

    While they specialize in contract positions, many are direct or temp to direct.  It is the first source I use when trying to find another position.

    The company I just interviewed for wanted me to say another day so I could drive around enough to see the surrounding area, but I don’t have any vacation time and I was already taking a 2 days without pay.

    Always ask for pay due to missing work for interviews, (donate week ends if they will interview on weekends, HA HA).

    There are different types of "recruiting" firms out there.  Mainly you will work with either a contingency firm or a retained firm.  Contingency basically means...they get paid if they place someone in a position.  Multiple firms can be working on one position at a time...which creates competition and low quality service...these are "turn and burn" firms.  The retained firms are paid no matter what.  There are basic fees set up between the firm and the hiring company.  As I said, they get paid no matter what and they have good base salaries...so there is no reason for these people to give low quality service to the clients or the candidates.  They really do care about helping place the right person in a position as it creates more long term opportunities than just "what's happening today."  In regards to firms that work specifically in the engineering world...you should check out rsmr dot com.  They have a great reputation and superior staff.

    Pick up some trade magazines for your trade, they will have ads in there. Industry specific headhunters have the best contacts.

    Many recruiters simple take job postings listed in local newspapers or on company websites and reprint them.  After being contacted by a candidate they will call the firm and explain the price they want if the engineer is hired.  I have had recruiters ask for over $5000 for an employee, I have never and will never pay a recruiter for their services.  If you search a little you can typically find the original posting on the web and will have better luck landing the job.

    As The Tick pointed out I have only had good experience with smaller firms.  The big ones just seem more concerned about putting bodies in the interviewing seats then helping people find jobs.

    That's just my experience but I stay away from the larger firms.

    Use them all simultaneously, and send your resume to ALL possible employers previous to contacting recruiters.

    If a firm sends your resume to an employer without asking first, STOP using them immediately and forever.

    Always get the actual name of an employer before allowing your resume to be sent.  Many HR departments will simply trash any and all double-referrals.

    ive recently been getting job propositions from various recruiters, two of which actually/amazingly are in line for the type of work I'm looking for... One from Ensynch Inc. and another from Convergenz LLC.

    Anyone know anything about these two? The fact that they got what kind of job I'm looking for right has perked my interest.

    The recruiters you cite do not have any jobs, they have the name of companies that have the jobs!  Negociate with the companies and remember that the recruiter will get almost 50% of a years' salary for their fee or 40% override of your hourly rate for contract asignments.
