Digging under High Tension Electric Lines

Digging under High Tension Electric Lines

Digging under High Tension Electric Lines

(OP)
We have to install some anodes for a waterline project near an electrical substation.  We will have to work under some 62KV electric lines in order to get into the site.  I am wondering what sort of separation horizontally and vertically we need to have to prevent a dangerous situation.  I have seen too many of those electic hazard horror films.

RE: Digging under High Tension Electric Lines

IF you call the utility not only should they tell you. They may send a man or a crew out to stand by while you do it.

RE: Digging under High Tension Electric Lines

your cathodic protection folks are going to have some issues with the grounding of the powerline versus the cathodic protection.

Remember that copper and steel in the ground will result in the steel being sacrificial to the copper. Your cathodic protection folks will know this, one would hope.  If not, you need to talk with them about it.

In the UK, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) produce guide lines GS.6 for working safely under power lines, it is a document for purchase, a synopsis is available at the following link. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/ais8.pdf
