Chinesse Steel
Chinesse Steel
(OP)
Question:
So what I have is a chinesse steel beam 915x407x13x20 (depthxheightxwebxflange). The problem I have here is that it is 60 ft long with 2 - 50kip loads 15ft of center. not that this is a reallt big problem or anything but the beam is on its side(weak axis). I figure if anyone even trys to pick this beam up it will bend quite alot. How would you pick this up?
Options:
I would weld another plate on either side to make it a box beam in both locations where the 2 50kip concentrated loads are? Is there any other method you would go about strenthening a beam to pick it up from the weak axis?

RE: Chinesse Steel
And what does the Chinese nature of the steel have to do with it? Are you worried about the material?

RE: Chinesse Steel
The sectional properties of an I beam are easy enough to calculate, and the structural analysis of the beam is also simple enough. If I did not know the yield strength of the steel I suppose that taking a low conservative value is fine.
Picking up a beam from the weak axes is not a problem in principle as long as it is strong enough to take it, in fact it is probably better because lateral torsional buckling should not be an issue.
If the beam fails there are several alternatives:
- Change the lifting arrangement, with more pick up points, more closely spaced.
- Use lifting beam (a bit silly to lift another beam)
- Strengthen the beam. Although your suggestion is more like a local patch, and if I understand correctly the issue is global strength
my 2 cents
RE: Chinesse Steel
There are three beams attached to rather large box beams.
