Wingwall joints
Wingwall joints
(OP)
For a gravity wingwall, Bridge manual states max spacing of construction and expansion joints.
When and where on the wingwall should you place an expansion joint? (near corner, at stepped ftg, etc)

RE: Wingwall joints
I've never seen a wingwall broken into sections unless greater than 20' or so. Then, it is typically in the middle for simplistic reasons. It separates the smaller cantilever wing length from the portion you are going to place on a spread or pile footing.

RE: Wingwall joints
For abutments my state DOT requires exp joints w/no reinforcement extending thru the joint every 90’. I have never seen a wingwall with an expansion joint like this, since wingwalls are typically only around 10’-30’ long. I would imagine if you had a very long wingwall, almost like a retaining wall, expansion joints would be required. For typical wingwalls I would not expect to see an expansion joint.
