20 Cr-19 Ni- 6.5 Mo Heat treatment

20 Cr-19 Ni- 6.5 Mo Heat treatment

(OP)
Is it possible to heat treat such a high alloyed stainless grade? If so what is the best heat treatment route for this grade? At present I believe it goes through a re-melting route. Is it possible to heat treat without getting signifigant scalling/catastrophic oxidation? Any comments greatly appreciated. SS

RE: 20 Cr-19 Ni- 6.5 Mo Heat treatment

These alloys are absolutely heat treatable. Look up AL6XN on Allegheny Ludlum's web site. There is a detailed PDF file telling all about the heat treating and every other processing aspect of grades such as you describe.

RE: 20 Cr-19 Ni- 6.5 Mo Heat treatment

The only heat treatment is solution anneal.  There is no hardening or tempering for these alloys.
If you anneal in air you must have plenty of fresh air or you risk catastrophic oxidation.  Proper pickling is critical.
It is usually better to anneal in dry hydrogen, but getting a fast enough quench rate in bright anneal may be difficult.

Why do you want to heat treat?  have you done lots of welding or forming?
