Through plate connection into tube

Through plate connection into tube

I have a through plate slotted through the center of a 6x6 tube.

Looking up the AISC Hollow structural Connections manual they say to treat it the same as a face welded gusset, even for bending of the face.

The thing that I cant understand is that now I have a slot cut out of the face of the tube and only a fillet weld to connect it. How can this be taken as the same as a continuous face? Am I missing something?

RE: Through plate connection into tube

Two seperate cantilevers off the tube corners perhaps?

RE: Through plate connection into tube

You have two filets, one on each side to replace the continuous face.  It becomes continuous by continuous connecting parts.

JAE,

yes I thought of this. P/2XL/2 = PL/4 same as for the span, but the design method uses a width morethan the plate.

civilperson,

The weld has to be quite large to make this work (1/2" fillet weld in my case) which is far heavier than the design method would require.

Thanks for the help. I ended up using a T bracket welded to the webs. This gives me a more predictable result.
