Geotextiles layer at the pipeline trenches

Friens ,

I have a design drawings for buried steel pipes , the cross section of the pipeline trench is showing a geotextile layer ,The cross section of the trench is showing Bedding materila layer , Single size aggregates,Getextile , and then the compacted basecourse at the top. Can anyone tell why we use the geotextile in trenches ??

Thanks for your inputs

RE: Geotextiles layer at the pipeline trenches

So any water that gets in the trench will drain without taking the bedding and surrounding soil away with it.  The bedding and backfill will be retained by the geotextile as the water migrates through it.
