Flexible body dynamics with ABAQUS

Flexible body dynamics with ABAQUS

Flexible body dynamics with ABAQUS

(OP)
Hi,

Does anyone has any experience with modeling of dynamics of multiple flexible bodies in contact. Take for example an engine block with it's pistons moving up and down. In this case you may wonder what are the stress induced in pistons, engine blosk casing and other components like the crank shaft.

Another typical example is earth moving equipment, for example the arm of bulldozer moving earth. The arm undergoes large rigid body  displacements and rotations, which are of course not totally rigid as stresses and displacements are induced in  the components during the operation.

Does anyone know how this types of analyses is set up in ABAQUS/CAE, setup of boundary conditions, what solver should be used etc?

RE: Flexible body dynamics with ABAQUS

automechanicar,

I do not have experience in doing this kind of analysis, but I  have an idea of how this might be done. However the way this problem is approached is not the way you suggested. To do dynamic analysis of multiple flexible bodies in contact would requiure too many computing resources, would be very computation intensive. Therefore the kinematics and dynamics is studied using rigid bodies. Then the forces predicted by these rigid bodies are transmitted to corresponding flexible body.

'Connector' elements in ABAQUS can be used to do the dynamic analysis.

Gurmeet,

If you take a look at the NE Nastran simulation of the combustion engine at http://www.nenastran.com/newnoran/animations for example..

Do you mean that this engine assembly has been analysed using MBD software (like MSC Adams or DADS or even within Nastran itself) first before the computed forces were used as input for the stress/strain analysis?

Regards,

automechanicar
