Hydrant Locations
Hydrant Locations
(OP)
Anyone have input or standards-references on where to locate Fire Hydrants on un-curbed "rural" roadways? We have a mountainous project, with large cut/fill slopes, and roadways without curb/sidewalk. The cross-section is a typical 2-lane road, 2' shoulder, then 4:1 closeout to a narrow ditch, then cut/fill. You want the hydrant close enough to be easily visible and easy for the FD to connect to, but not so close that it's endangered by traffic, etc. So where would you put it?

RE: Hydrant Locations
1- No hydrants at all, only place them on the side streets serving residences/other structures, or
2-Place hydrants beyond the ditch line, so not a traffic hazard. Create a small flat area around it. Possibly create a pathway to the hydrant area, with a culvert to facilitate the ditch crossing.
