CAN AN ASME DESIGNED PRESSURE VESSEL BE USED IN EUROPEAN STATES (PED)

CAN AN ASME DESIGNED PRESSURE VESSEL BE USED IN EUROPEAN STATES (PED)

CAN AN ASME DESIGNED PRESSURE VESSEL BE USED IN EUROPEAN STATES (PED)

(OP)
I mean if the maximum hydrostatic pressure out of PED and ASME is used to design pressure vessel having:
Material - 316L ST. STL and working condition
MAWP = 10 Bar at 120 degree celcius

Materials used are ASME material.

2)Do I need to carry out marking and testing as per PED as it is to be used in European Market.

Any views greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

RE: CAN AN ASME DESIGNED PRESSURE VESSEL BE USED IN EUROPEAN STATES (PED)

Hi David,

The answer can be yes provide certain criteria are met. See the attached link to an ASME publication.  http://catalog.asme.org/Codes/PrintBook/BOI_2001_Guide_Stamp_Holders.cfm

I know of companies that buld ASME vessels is the US and receive CE marks.  They use TUV for this work, see attached link. http://www.us.tuv.com/industries/investment_pressure.aspx?Nav2=materials

I hope this helps you get started.

RE: CAN AN ASME DESIGNED PRESSURE VESSEL BE USED IN EUROPEAN STATES (PED)

If you want to supply a vessel into the EU it must comply with the PED if it falls within the scope.

You can get a copy of the directive online at http://europa.eu.int/comm/enterprise/pressure_equipment/ped/index_en.html

The main issue is to fulfil the requirements of the Essential safety requirements in Annex 1.

You will need a notified body only if the construction mo0dule is greater than Module A, for Module A you can self certify.

A list of notified bodies is available at http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/newapproach/nando/index.cfm?fuseaction=directive.notifiedbody&dir_id=19&type_dir=NO%20CPD&pro_id=99999&prc_id=99999&ann_id=99999&prc_anx=99999

And there is a forum for this at http://www.eng-tips.com/threadminder.cfm?pid=748

It isn't difficult, you basically assess the elements of ASME that fulfil the essential safety requirements, where the code doesn't fulfil the requirements you have to assess the risk yourselves.

The hydrostatic test pressure can be different, the minimum pressure you can test at is the combination of the value prescribed by ASME and that prescribed in Annex 1 7.4 of the PED.

There are issues with materials but this has been dealt with before on this forum, the ASME forum and the CEN forum.

Any questions, post them in the CEN forum.
