Light Pole Pier Anchor Bolt Replacement

Light Pole Pier Anchor Bolt Replacement

Light Pole Pier Anchor Bolt Replacement

(OP)
Had a contractor hit a parking lot light pole with a backhoe causing the anchor bolts to bend and twist. Is it necessary to replace the entire pier or is there another solution?

RE: Light Pole Pier Anchor Bolt Replacement

Obviously you are replacing the damaged pole and fasteners, correct?

What is your structure like?  Concrete above ground level?  How tall?  Any noticeable cracking?

What are the wind forces like?  In my area, you wouldn't want a cracked concrete base.  That would lead to a downed pole and likely hurt someone or damage a vehicle.

Cory

RE: Light Pole Pier Anchor Bolt Replacement

If the pole and welds are not damaged then it should be okay for re-use. It may be possible to cut back the bent anchor bolts and weld them to the base plate, but this depends on the type of steel they are made from.

While your at it, you should probably grind back and reweld the weld to the baseplate on the side of the impact. This is in case there is a fracture there from the impact.

The pier sits about 30" above grade and doesn't appear to be damaged. I believe at minimum the anchor bolts would have to be replaced. The problem I'm having is that I'm not aware of any methods of just replacing the anchor bolts without replacing the existing pier.

RE: Light Pole Pier Anchor Bolt Replacement

How are the anchor bolts connected to the pier?  Are they threaded rods embedded in concrete?

Yes, I believe they are embedded L shape threaded anchors.

RE: Light Pole Pier Anchor Bolt Replacement

Diamond core out the old anchor bolts and embed new epoxy bolts.  This is very commonly done.

Agree w/Packerfan but if you are lucky - just cut off the old bolts and drill new holes if the base plate pattern will allow you to turn it.
