STUD BOLTS ASTM A193 B7 - PMI

STUD BOLTS ASTM A193 B7 - PMI

STUD BOLTS ASTM A193 B7 - PMI

(OP)
ASTM A193 B7 IS CONSIDERED HIGH STRENGTH LOW ALLOY (MICROALLOYED) STEEL. STUD BOLTS B7 REQUIRE PMI (POSITIVE MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION)? THANKS IN ADVANCE!

RE: STUD BOLTS ASTM A193 B7 - PMI

Positive Material Identification (PMI) is normally specified as a Quality Control measure to verify material identification. As far as a Code and Standards requirement, no, there is no such requirement. You, as the user, can specify PMI prior to installation.

RE: STUD BOLTS ASTM A193 B7 - PMI

yes, metengr is correct.  PMI is specified by USER.  Sometimes it is required, sometimes it isn't.

RE: STUD BOLTS ASTM A193 B7 - PMI

A bolt PMI would be a hardness check to verify comformnace with A193 requirements.

RE: STUD BOLTS ASTM A193 B7 - PMI

grampi1;
A hardness check is not PMI. It is a method to verify heat treatment in accordance with a specification, it does not sort material.

RE: STUD BOLTS ASTM A193 B7 - PMI

Of course hardness is not PMI.  But what is important about low alloy studs is their strength range.  Don't want too soft or too hard.  PMI could be fine, but still be a failure waiting to happen if heat treatment was wrong.
